Version 0x00
Version 0x00 is not a brand refresh. It is the first commit, the one that still has to be true, or else every commit stacked on top of it is fan fiction.
In July 2019 the values line was already plain, and it was not yet wearing a sysadmin costume: “My values are in line with classical English liberalism. I think that the ideas that came out of the enlightenment are viable and beneficial to honest people.” Viable. Beneficial. Honest people. Not a theory of everything, and not a tribe, but a bet that a set of ideas — speech you do not have to like, a person who is not a specimen, a government that is a tool and not a parent — still compiles. I have stress-tested that bet across seven years of public sentences, and the bet still compiles; only the vocabulary grew up around it.
Speech Is a Protocol, Not a Permission is the speech half, said with the tools I actually use now. The Universal Node is the person half: a right is a boundary every node may draw, and the boundary is never scarce. Admins Who Think They Own the Users is the government half, written after I watched the tool decide it was the parent. None of those essays contradict the 2019 line. They are the 2019 line after it met a network.
Not an Identitarian
The label trap was visible immediately. January 2020, in parentheses, like a correction scribbled into a diff: “Nevermind the label; I am an individualist, not an identitarian.” Labels are how a political class files you so that it can stop listening to you. Individualist is not a team jersey; it is a refusal to let the jersey be the person, while identitarian is the jersey promoted into a metaphysics. Identity Is Not a Spreadsheet and The Intersectional Caste System are the long form. The short form was already in the log, weeks after the liberalism sentence, and it was already a systems metaphor: “An identity-based cookie-cutter narrative is a software package for you to execute.”
Read the date on that package line: August 2019. The root metaphor people assume I picked up from some later aesthetic was sitting in the crate from the very start. A narrative that assigns you a script based on your category is malware with a moral UI; you are supposed to run it, report compliance, and call the output your identity, and I never installed it. Collectivism as a Secular Theology is what the package looks like once it adds a priesthood, and the priesthood was no surprise, because a software package that cannot survive a user who reads the source will always grow a priesthood to punish the user.
The Beacon Signal later described the feeling of being handed the world before the question, in their own essay and in their own words. My 2019 words were the package. The rhyme is real; the byline is not transferable. Coreflame: Reason Against Prophecy is what I do when a package starts calling itself destiny.
What the Epoch Actually Reset
The later vocabulary — sovereign, root, airgap, tenant, firewall — is a better interface on the same machine. It is better because I work in those terms every single day, and a metaphor you work inside will stay honest far longer than a metaphor you only applaud. The Sysadmin Protocol and I Killed Windows are the interface installed on the metal, and State as Operating System is the interface aimed back at the country. Epoch reset, as a feeling, was the moment the interface caught up with the commit. The commit itself did not move.
The joy did not move either. The same log that holds the liberalism line holds the small bright moments that kept the machine warm, like the night in VR when the room went quiet and the other person turned out to love the same records I did: “Woooow I found someone who’s in love with bemani and dancemania music in vrc 😂 instant friends!” Shared taste is evidence that someone is actually in the room, and a liberalism that cannot make room for that kind of evidence is only a debating club.
What did not change: honest people are the point. Ideas that cannot be said in front of honest people are not viable; they are club rules. Disagreement is the use case, not the threat. A person is not a row. A government that needs you stupid, scared, or filed is failing the liberalism, not fulfilling it. What did change is that I stopped asking the club to bless the commit. Build Canada is the public project I point at when someone confuses that refusal with nihilism. Their about page is builders, merit, a country treated as something you make. I do not need their manifesto; I need the counterexample, because the enlightenment bet was never “feel correctly.” It was “build, argue, and let the work be judged.”
The log also holds reads I am not going to promote into fake precision. I have called the economy a housing bubble and a government-employees bubble. I have called the link between high immigration policy and the housing crisis obvious. I have called a carbon-tax rebate a vote bribe and the backlash a fact the admins misread as a messaging problem. Those sentences stay mine; they are not a statistical appendix, and this origin story will not grow one. Not a Plague is the principle underneath the housing anger: people are not a cost to be managed by the admin who created the scarcity story. Capacity is what free minds do, and a bubble is what you get when the admin manages the inputs and then acts shocked at the price.
The First Instruction
If you only read the new essays, you can mistake the aesthetic for the origin. The aesthetic is fun, and I intend to keep it, but fun is not the root. The root is a liberal who meant it, an individualist who would not wear the identity package, and a systems metaphor that showed up before the blog did. Everything since is a diff: some diffs were loud, some were assisted, some were wrong enough to revert. The test for a diff is the same test as 2019. Does it still treat an honest person as the unit? Does it still let them speak, exit, and build? If yes, merge. If it needs them smaller so that a class can feel large, revert it, and do not apologize to the class.
Version 0x00 boots. That is the only origin story I am interested in telling: no city, no employer, no private cast. The public sentences are the repo, the enlightenment ideas are the tests, and the rest is runtime.
