Admins Who Think They Own the Users
State as Operating System is about the machine. This is about the people sitting at its console who have quietly come to believe that the root password came bundled with the job, that the users are not citizens renting a shared machine but inventory listed on an asset sheet they alone are permitted to read.
In July 2019 they were already “DISGUSTING control freaks.” That was never a grand theory of the state; it was a clear read of the admins themselves, of the reflex to manage a whole population the way a nervous helpdesk manages a user it does not trust. Control freaks do not want a readable config. They want a quiet ticket queue, a dashboard of green lights, a world in which every citizen question registers as a misbehaving process and every refusal registers as an incident to be closed. The fix, in their mind, is always more policy, tighter permissions, and a tone of exhausted professionalism while they lock the door from the inside.
The phrase that eventually fit them was political class. By late 2023 the media habit of equating dissent with fascism had arrived at its own punchline, and the punchline was a category error: too many people had come to think democracy means “the consensus of the elitist political class.” Democracy, if the word still boots at all, is a constraint on that class, not a pet name for it. When the constraint gets redescribed as rudeness, the admins have already won the naming war, and naming wars are exactly where privilege escalation hides. You never call it root. You call it stewardship, safety, our democracy, the grown-ups in the room, and the user hears a lullaby and wakes up in a guest account.
Deference Is the Exploit
The exploit is not a zero-day; it is manners. “Deference is destruction of checks & balances.” A check is a function that runs whether or not the admin is in a good mood, and deference is the act of commenting that function out and calling the commit respect. Respect for a person is a fine and decent thing; respect that disables the audit log is a backdoor wearing a smile.
Watch how the escalation spreads. A tenant who believes the landlord’s judgment is the definition of the building will sign anything slid under the door, and a user who believes the admin’s judgment is the definition of the country will applaud the next restriction and then explain it to their friends as maturity. The friends are the lateral movement. You do not need a conspiracy when deference replicates itself, and Collectivism as a Secular Theology is the replication manual: a priesthood, a sin you were born carrying, and a blasphemy charge for daring to claim you can read your own life. The harassment that follows is not a side effect of that theology; it is the design. “Collectivist ideology is designed to harass and berate and cast out individualism, which is a natural inherent personality trait.” The priesthood needs its heretic, because without an individual to cast out it has nothing left to interpret.
The underlying machinery has a name I gave it in security terms: “In IT security terms, the privilege stack is the operating system that runs woke ideology.” The privilege stack is how the admins sort the inventory, ranking every node by the unchosen tags on its hardware so that the sorting itself becomes the source of authority. And the uninstall instruction is not a polite request whispered at a town hall: “The best thing Canadians can do to protect Canada is reject the wokescold intersectionality caste mentality with extreme prejudice.” The Intersectional Caste System is the full teardown of that stack.
The ownership claim got specific in 2024. “The political class believes it owns your children.” Ownership is the tell. A landlord rents you a room; an owner inventories the occupants. Education policy, medical policy, speech rules in a classroom: the pattern is not “we hold a trust for people who cannot yet vote.” The pattern is “these users are property of the configuration, and the parents are a noisy peripheral.” If that sentence makes a certain kind of admin sputter, good, because sputtering is not a rebuttal. The Armed Super-Monopoly is what the inventory looks like once the admin also holds the only legal gun, and the gun is not required for the belief to exist; the belief is simply what eventually asks for the gun.
Our Democracy, Their Sudo
“It’s impossible to relate to people who identify with or mistakenly feel loyalty towards the political class.” Loyalty to a country is a sane and beautiful thing; loyalty to the current admin group is a category error wearing a flag pin. The class is a rotating set of accounts with elevated rights, and treating the account as if it were the nation is how you end up defending the outage. In 2024 the outage had a comic shape: they were “so out of touch that they think the blowback to carbon tax is because they have a messaging problem.” A messaging problem is what you call a design flaw when you are not allowed to touch the design. The users were not failing to understand; they understood perfectly, and they were refusing the patch.
I wrote, after a pamphlet from a Liberal MP, that the carbon-tax rebate read as “a literal vote bribe.” That is my read of a political offer, not a criminal charge, and the distinction matters, because the architectural point never needed a courtroom. A rebate that arrives as a household cheque, while the tax that funds the whole theatre stays in place, is a UI, and the UI trains the user to thank the admin for a fraction of the user’s own money. Gratitude for a round-trip is not citizenship. It is a captive portal.
The same captive-portal instinct shows up anywhere the class confuses its consensus with the country. Housing, intake, payroll: I have said in so many words that “Canada’s economy is a housing bubble and government employees bubble,” and that “the connection between high immigration policies and the housing crisis has always been obvious.” Those are my reads of the load. They are not a second essay smuggled into this one, and they are not a dare to fake a statistic; the point here is who believes they get to size the load without ever showing the worksheet. The Configuration Grows is the worksheet problem in labour and speech, and the admins will always prefer the summary, because summaries are where ownership hides.
The Users Are Not Inventory
Build Canada is useful here as a counter-posture, not as a party. Their about page speaks to people who intend to build and who expect to be judged by what they do, and builders are a different species entirely from admins who think they own the users. A builder wants the machine legible so the next person can repair it; an owner-admin wants the machine illegible so the next person has to call the desk. I will take the builder every time. I will not take a new desk with better fonts.
Version 0x00 is where this reflex came from: a classical liberal who, already in 2019, did not want a control freak anywhere near the power switch. Overpasses is the day the admins reached for an emergency config because the users had gathered where the admins could finally see them. Emergency powers are what you grant to a class you still believe is renting; you do not grant them to a class you have caught believing it owns the children, the cheque, and the dictionary.
The fix is not a nicer admin. The fix is a user who can read the lease, refuse the deference, and keep root on their own mind no matter who is sitting at the console this season. The political class can run for the seat. It does not get the human.
